Snakes are among the most looked-up dream images anywhere, and the symbol on which traditions disagree most sharply. Folk readings speak of betrayal and deceit; Jungian readings speak of transformation and renewal. Both are readings, not findings, and it is honest to say so first.
No research fixes a meaning
Snakes rank among the most reported animals in dream content surveys, including among city populations who have never seen one up close. That is data. What the image represents is not.
No study has shown that dreaming of a snake corresponds to betrayal, illness, money or any other event. When a site states otherwise with confidence, it is repeating tradition, not evidence.
The three common readings, and where they come from
Folk tradition: commonly reads the snake as a false friend, envy or nearby betrayal. It is the most widespread reading and the one behind most searches.
Jungian reading: ties the snake to shedding skin — transformation, renewal, whatever renews itself below conscious awareness. Jung treated the serpent as one of the oldest images of the unconscious.
Physiological reading: proposes that the sleeping brain rehearses threat recognition, and that snakes are frequent in dreams for the same reason they are frequent in phobias. A hypothesis, not a consensus.
The variation matters more than the symbol
A still snake is one dream; a striking one is another. People report very different emotions depending on the detail, and the detail is what is worth recording.
Black snake, snake in water, snake in the house, snake biting your hand, many small snakes, one large motionless snake, killing it, running from it — each of these is searched separately precisely because people feel them as distinct dreams. They are.
Note size, colour, whether it moved, whether there was contact, and what you did. Those five fields separate dreams a dictionary would merge.
If the dream repeats
Snakes are among the images that most often return. When they do, they rarely return identical: the size changes, the setting changes, the company changes.
That is exactly where a written record starts to earn its keep. The useful question is not what the snake means, but what changed between one appearance and the next.

Size and colour. Where it was. Whether it moved towards you. Whether it bit. What you did — ran, killed it, froze, picked it up.

Does dreaming of a snake mean betrayal?
