How Dreamgate works

Four things happen between the alarm going off and the pattern you never knew you had. The first one is the one everything else depends on.

Baku, the Dreamgate dream-eater
Baku, at the gate every morning.
01

The Morning Gate

Dream recall dies in minutes. Dreamgate wakes with you and won't let go until the dream is written — the habit every other journal fails to build. Woke at 1:30am? Whisper it in; every REM cycle you catch is a dream saved.

02

The Meaning

Symbols light up as you type — flying, teeth, storms, leaving your body — with psychological and Jungian readings. AI interprets against your own dream history, never a generic dictionary.

03

Paint your dream

The scene you barely remembered, turned into something worth hanging on a wall — and kept with that night for good.

04

The Dream Atlas

A living map of your nights: streaks, recall rate, lucid rate, astral journeys, the moon on every dream — and correlations like "high-stress days end in nightmares."

New in version 1.1

Talk to it at 3am without opening it.

A dream is gone in about ninety seconds. Put Dreamgate on your home screen or Lock Screen and one tap starts recording — no unlocking the app, no PIN, no typing. Speak, then go back to sleep. Dreamgate writes it out before breakfast.

🔒 The widget can add a new dream. It can never show you the ones you have already saved — those still need your PIN.

At 3am: one target, warm light, nothing else. Amber instead of blue, so it does not wake you properly.

After your wake time the same tile changes: last night’s dream, ready to read or paint.

Why not just ask ChatGPT?

A fair question — you can paste a dream into any chatbot and get a thoughtful answer. But the answer was never the hard part. Everything around the answer is.

Baku, the Dreamgate dream-eater
Baku only eats the dreams you actually caught.
One dream · five lenses

There were stone steps going down into the sea. I couldn’t tell whether I was meant to walk down, or come back up.

🌊 water🪨 stairs⬇️ descent

For Jung, water is not danger — it is depth. And these steps were built: somebody made a way down, which turns the descent into an invitation rather than an accident. The dream isn’t asking whether the sea is safe. It is asking what you keep standing at the edge of.

What have you been circling the edge of?

The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul.
C. G. Jung · Collected Works, vol. 10, ¶304

Illustrative readings, written in the app’s own voice. Every lens ends with a question, and not one of them predicts anything. Where each quotation comes from →

⏰ A chat can't wake youThe hard part was never the interpretation. Dream memory fades within minutes of opening your eyes, so most dreams are lost before anyone could interpret them. Dreamgate greets you at your wake time and holds the page until it's written — and can listen overnight and record you talking in your sleep.
🎙️ Speak it, in the language you dreamt inAt 6am nobody types — you mumble. Dictation runs on the phone itself, in 14 languages you set independently of the app’s, so you can read English and dream in Arabic. And the reading comes back in the language the dream was written in, without being asked.
🧵 A chat doesn't remember youEvery dream you paste starts from zero. Dreamgate reads tonight's dream against your own history: the symbols that recur for you specifically, what you wrote about a similar dream in March, the weeks that broke your pattern. The reflection you write today becomes context for the reading you get in November.
📊 A chat can't countBecause your entries are structured rather than messages in a thread, months of nights become arithmetic: recall rate, lucid rate, the moon on every dream, and correlations you would never notice by hand — like stressful days ending in nightmares.
🎨 A chat won’t paint it for youA chatbot can make an image — if you ask, and describe the dream a second time. Dreamgate offers it from the words you already wrote half-asleep, and keeps the picture with that night. Months later, the artwork is how you find the dream again.
🔒 Your dreams stay on your phoneNo account, no profile, nothing tied to your name. Your journal lives in a private database on your device behind an optional PIN. Night audio never leaves the phone at all. A reading sends only the one dream you chose, and we don't keep it.

To be fair to the chatbots: they are better than us at open-ended exploration. If you want to argue with an interpretation for an hour and chase every tangent, go and do that — it's genuinely good. What we're built for is the other thing: catching the dream in the first place, and being there in six months when the same symbol comes back.

Dream artwork

Explore your dream through Psychological (Jungian), Spiritist (Kardecist), Jewish, Christian, or Islamic traditions. Every reading remains a reflection — never a prediction.

One dream, five ways of seeing

A woman dreams of a staircase of stone descending into still water, and cannot tell whether she is meant to go down or come up. Five traditions read that dream. None of them is the correct one.

A symbol has no fixed meaning in isolation. The sea is not “positive” — it depends on whether you nearly drowned once.

Talmud · Berakhot 55a–55b
חלמא דלא מפשר כאגרתא דלא מקריא
“A dream uninterpreted is like a letter left unread.”
Rav Ḥisda · Berakhot 55a · Aramaic
כל החלומות הולכים אחר הפה
“All dreams follow the mouth.”
Rabbi Bena'a · Berakhot 55b · Hebrew

The second line is the startling one. The rabbis are saying that the meaning given to a dream participates in what that dream comes to mean — that interpretation is not excavation but conversation.

We found this after we had already built the app this way, and it settled the argument. It is why Dreamgate ends every reading with a question and gives you somewhere to answer it, why the reading is called a reflection and never a verdict, and why nothing here will ever tell you what your night meant. A dream you never look at is the unread letter. What it becomes is partly up to you.

“The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul.”
C. G. Jung · Collected Works, vol. 10, ¶304

Eighteen centuries after the rabbis, in a different language and for different reasons, the same idea: the dream is a way in, and it only opens if you go through it.

REM · what has actually been measured

Your brain, while you dream

REM sleep is not the brain switching off — it is a different mode of being awake. Four findings, each from a study we can name:

Amygdala▲ more active
The amygdala runs hotYour emotional center is more active in REM than when you are awake — which is why dreams feel so much before they mean anything.
Maquet et al., Nature, 1996
Hippocampus⟳ replaying
The hippocampus replays your dayMemory circuits reactivate overnight, weaving new experiences into old ones — the reason yesterday keeps leaking into your dreams.
Wilson & McNaughton, Science, 1994
Prefrontal cortex▼ powering down
Your logic center goes quietThe prefrontal cortex powers down in REM — which is why flying to work barefoot feels perfectly normal until you wake.
Maquet et al., Nature, 1996
Frontal areas▲ back online
Lucidity switches it back onIn lucid dreams, frontal activity climbs back toward waking levels mid-REM — you become aware inside the dream because the observer wakes up first.
Voss et al., Sleep, 2009

Dreamgate teaches you a finding like this every day — small, real, and yours to test against your own nights.

Baku, the Dreamgate dream-eater, inhaling a nightmare

Meet Baku 獏

In Japanese folklore, the baku is the gentle chimera children call when they wake from a nightmare: “Baku-san, come eat my dream.” He is Dreamgate's guide — he keeps your streak at the Morning Gate, teaches you one real piece of dream science a day, and walks you down the path from Dreamer to Oneironaut.

Nobody reads your dreams but you 🔒

Dreams are the most intimate data there is. Your journal lives in a private database on your phone, behind your PIN. No account. No ads. You own the backups. Artwork sends only a scene description — never your original words. An AI reading sends dream text only when you explicitly request one.
