Insects are among the most searched dream images and among those that provoke the strongest reaction on waking. Disgust is the dominant emotion, and that alone separates this theme from almost every other.
The emotion is disgust, not fear
Most uncomfortable dreams arrive with fear. Insect reports arrive predominantly with revulsion — a different emotion, with different bodily responses.
Worth recording, because it changes the reading. A disgust dream is not a threat dream, even though dictionaries treat the two identically.
What the traditions propose
Folk readings tend to tie insects, cockroaches especially, to something dirty, persistent or multiplying beyond control — small problems accumulating. Jungian readings tend to treat swarms as what consciousness cannot organise.

The variation matters more than the symbol
One insect or many? Cockroaches, spiders, ants, bees? On your body, in the food, in the house? Did you kill them, run, or just look?
Flying cockroaches, insects coming out of your mouth or skin, a swarm, ants in a line — each variation is searched on its own because each produces a different revulsion. Note the species, the number and where they were.
What to write down tomorrow morning
Which insect. How many. Where they were — on your body, in the house, in food. What you did. The exact feeling on waking: disgust, panic, irritation.
If the dream arrives in weeks of accumulated mess or small unfinished tasks, note that too. It is the pattern the reports most suggest, though it is not proven.

Does dreaming of cockroaches mean trouble?
It is the most common folk reading, but tradition rather than finding. No study has shown a correspondence between cockroach dreams and real problems.
Are many insects worse than one?
It is a different dream, not necessarily a worse one. Swarms tend to produce more intense revulsion in the reports. Worth noting the number separately.
I dreamt insects came out of my body. Should I be concerned?
It is an unpleasant report and more common than people assume. The dream itself indicates nothing clinical. If it comes frequently with poor sleep, the sleep is worth attention.
